Lisa | Orlando,
FL
Seven years after joining the National Bone Marrow Registry Lisa
learned she was a potential match for someone suffering from
Myelodysplastic Syndrome. That’s a group of bone marrow
diseases in which the bone marrow fails to produce normal red blood
cells.
Lisa underwent a series of blood tests to confirm the match, but
it was several months later before the patient was ready to begin
the transplant process.
Lisa started the donation process with an
information session, physical exam and a vein evaluation.
Once she was given the go ahead to begin the donation, Lisa
received a series of filgrastim injections, which prematurely
releases stem cells into the peripheral blood allowing them to be
harvested through a procedure that’s very similar to a blood or
platelet donation.
Lisa is thrilled she may have saved a life by donating her stem
cells!
Rosalind | Lady Lake,
FL
Rosalind is a dedicated donor who gives platelets every two
weeks in Lady Lake. She donated blood for the first time in
college for her friend’s sister who was having heart surgery.
She became a regular donor after learning that she had O negative
blood and eventually began donating platelets . Rosalind
continued donating as she moved across the country. She
donated her 50th gallon Independence Day weekend and celebrated by
wearing her best red, white and blue attire. Rosalind says at
the rate she’s going it’ll take her 10 ½ more years to reach 100
gallons.
140 gallon donor Ron Howard is Florida's Blood Centers top
donor.
Maureen | Ocala
When Maureen’s father passed away she never imagined four days
later her mother would be diagnosed with leukemia. She needed
several blood transfusions right away and receives platelets
regularly. To help other families going through similar
situations, Maureen and six of her family members got on the Big
Red Bus the day of her father’s funeral and gave the gift of
life. The Horswood family saw the impact the blood and
platelets had on their family and they wanted to honor their
parents by improving the quality of life for another family in
need.
