The FBC DifferenceFBC is dedicated to providing a safe and reliable supply of blood to the communities we serve. From our origins in a hospital wing in 1942, we have grown into one of the largest blood centers in Florida. Our life-saving mission of collecting, processing and distributing blood to those in need has a direct and immediate impact on public health and welfare. From the moment a donor gives blood to the time a patient needs it, we are dedicated to excellence in everything we do. FBC is a leader in the blood-banking industry, which is closely regulated by the FDA. We continually invest in our employees and our facilities, and our state-of-the-art laboratories and back-up systems give us a clear advantage in meeting the 24-hour need for blood throughout Florida. Donors are the most important people in our business and we are committed to their safety, comfort and convenience before, during and after the donation process. Our donors are literally the life blood of our organization and we could not meet the need of our hospital partners without them. FBC also supports advanced scientific research into the prevention of disease, and is a partner with leading research institutes on cutting-edge solutions to the most pressing health problems of our time. Below is additional information on
the features that constitute “The FBC Difference” and which
uniquely distinguish us from the competition: Geographic Scope of ServiceFBC is one of the largest blood centers in Florida, employing approximately 1,000 professionals in 21 counties serving nearly 70 hospitals and medical facilities throughout the state. We operate 41 branch locations and a fleet of 50 mobile units. We also maintain eight service hubs throughout Central and South Florida that distribute blood products to the hospitals we serve. Operational RedundancyOur loyal donor base, professional staff, solid relationships with hospitals and state-of-the-art facilities allow us to provide a safe and reliable blood supply to those in need. Our regional laboratories maintain back-up blood supplies available for use around the clock. This operational redundancy allows us to provide blood even if multiple medical emergencies put pressure on the blood supply, or if a natural disaster disrupts operations in one or more regions. Our system is a decentralized model that includes a headquarters building and seven strategically located distribution sites. This decentralized approach serves FBC well throughout the year, but has been especially effective during times of natural disasters (such as hurricanes), allowing additional blood components to be collected in unaffected areas and routed to where they are needed most. This allows us to provide a stable blood supply to our hospital customers, allowing them to operate normally without postponement or cancellation of surgery. State-of-the-Art TechnologyEnsuring a safe and reliable blood supply to our hospitals requires us to maintain state-of-the-art technology and facilities. This allows for the most efficient and cost-effective collection, processing and distribution. After blood is collected, it is kept at one of our regional laboratories while a sample is tested and screened. After testing, the results are shared electronically with our regional lab, which then delivers the donated blood directly to hospitals. Community InvestmentFBC is a service-based organization and we believe in sharing our time, talent and resources with others in the community. Members of our management team serve on boards of other organizations around the state that share our life-saving mission and values. We also invest in worthy causes that will improve the health and welfare of our community. For example, we maintain partnerships with high schools in our service area, encouraging students to maintain healthy lifestyles and donate blood with us. In return, we provide more than $400,000 annually in scholarship funding to their schools. Center of ExcellenceCaridianBCT, one of our vendor partners, has designated FBC as a Center of Excellence for exceptional performance in automated blood collections. FBC is one of a select few blood centers nationwide that share this designation. While there are many facets to this program, the emphasis is on training and educating the staff and donors to increase donor retention and target the right products from the right donor at the right time. FBC has invested more than $300,000 in this program through customer service training, donor appreciation programs and educational initiatives. This program has led to a more positive work environment for FBC staff as well as a more positive experience for our valued donors. Focusing on automation has also given FBC the ability to supply necessary products such as platelets to our hospitals when they are needed the most. Statewide LeadershipFBC is a leader in making Florida a destination for the bio-medical industry. We are proud of our support for world-class organizations such as the Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute at Lake Nona and the University of Central Florida College of Medicine, where we fund a scholarship for a deserving medical student. We believe our state has a bright future as an incubator for innovative businesses, ideas and strategies to advance the causes of science and health. We are committed to exploring these opportunities as fully as possible. Developing Florida’s potential as a bio-medical destination will nurture “a rising tide that lifts all boats.” The results are a diversified economy and an improved quality of life for all. These are the ultimate benefits delivered by “The FBC Difference.” |
